    Motivation is affected by two facts, our expectations and how we value the outcome. The following equation explains this relationship between expectation, value and how they affect motivation.
Expectation x Value = Motivation 

    That means if someone has low expectations and has high value about doing something, they will usually not be motivated (0 E x high V = no motivation ----->  Why should I bother if I can't get it?). Also, if he has high expectations and low value of doing something, he will not be motivated to do it (high E x 0 V = no motive ---->  I can have it, but why should I bother if I don't want to?). Returning to the case that I am analyzing, in the hunger games novel, the twelve districts are subject to the same conditions during the competition in the hunger games novel. But some districts showed a stronger motivation to participate in the hunger game than others. The reason is that they are more wealthy districts with a lot of resources to train the tributes, which will increase their expectations to win the game. In contrast, there is a limited chance of winning for the poor districts, which negatively affects the motivation of their tributes to participate in the game.




    The second variable in the motivation equation is the value (Expectation x Value = Motivation). In the case of Katniss, I will examine her value before and after she was selected to participate in the hunger game. Despite the valuable prizes, the game was not a choice for Katniss. However, she was physically qualified to participate in the game, and her skills could help her survive during the game (It appears that she did not expect a lot of herself). also, she realized how the utility value for this kind of competition was against her values. She thinks is it valuable to win the game if the cost is killing other people? Where is the pride of shedding other innocent participants' blood? Why are we allowing the Capitol to manipulate our lives? For losing the value combing with low expectation, Katniss and many other participants have no motivation to participate in this bloody game.

    Previously, I had discussed the reason behind Katniss's choice of volunteering instead of her sister Prim in this game ( Self-Determination Theory(SDT).

     It is ended up for katniss to be one of the tributes in this game. It was supposed for her to finger out a way to survive during the game, especially after promising her sister to do. One of the essential assistant factors to win the game is having support from the Gamemakers. They were allowed to send gifts for a chosen player during the game, such as food, drink, or medicine. The Gamemaker chooses the tribute who has the highest chance of winning, which means the tributes must be remarkable to gain the attention of the Gamemakers. Gaining the Gamemaker's attention is vital to surviving during the game, which is linked to the tribute's future goals. As we learned, the values theory of motivation can be defined as operationalized as utility value. ​Katniss tried to impress the Gamemakers by showing her skills. she chose to use a bow and arrow, she knows exactly how to use them in her mission, 

But, they ignored her and were busy eating and drinking while her life was on the line. Katniss wanted to get attention and gain admiration for her performance, which increases the value of this task. Shooting an unexpected target was the only way she think about it to get their attention, which helped her to get the highest score from the Gamemakers.
